Sugru Review – Hannah

We all have things that break, and it’s pretty frustrating when you don’t have the right tools to fix them. Sugru is a clay-like glue that you can mold over objects. It feels soft and pliable when you first take it out of the package, but after 24 hours, it turns into a permanent silicone rubber.

It adheres to many surfaces – such as glass, metal, plastics, wood, and ceramics – and can be used to fix frayed cords, old worn-out sneakers, broken toys, or to improve things that could be made a little better. Sugru isn’t just about fixing, though. With Sugru you can create helpful tools for your home, like cable organizers, pot handle grips, shower hooks, zipper pulls, and much more.

Just use your imagination! Once you open one of the small 5 gram packets, you have 30 minutes to work with Sugru before it starts to cure and becomes hard to mold. Then you can mold it to almost any surface, and it will set strong.

One thing I always manage to ruin are my phone’s charging cord and my headphones. By applying Sugru to the join where the cord meets the jack, I was able to create a seal that prevents it from tearing any farther, protects it from exposing the wires inside (which could be dangerous), and keeps it working well. (Although, a bit later I found out – after the layer split open and exposed my cord once again – that I apparently hadn’t used enough Sugru on my headphones. But after applying another thicker coat, there were no more problems.) I also used the inventive property of Sugru to create a hook to hang clothes on my closet door.

Sugru can stand temperatures up to 356°F and down to -58°F and can hold up to 4.4 lbs. It waterproof, weatherproof, and heat and cold resistant – so it’s especially great for fixing shoes, bike tires, or a broken dishwasher rack. It does have a shelf life of about 13 months (if it stays unopened), which is listed on the box, but to keep Sugru fresher for up to three times longer you can place the unopened packs inside the refrigerator.

If bought from the website, a box of three packs is $9.99 and a box of eight is $21.99. So it isn’t exactly cheap – and the packets are especially small – but if you can afford it, it is certainly a nice thing to have on hand for emergencies or everyday household fixes. It also comes in a variety of colors, including bright and neutral shades, so you can choose to make it blend in or stand out and customize your creations to be perfect for you.

Although it has its limitations, overall Sugru is a great way to unleash your inner creativity by fixing old things in a new way, making new things that are useful for everyday life, and improving things to make them easier for you to work with. Sugru is a cleverly-designed product that can make life better for you in little things.
